AI use policy
Writing
I don’t use AI to write. In this world where it is now trivial to generate an infinite amount of text monkeys-on-a-typewriter style, I find it grounding to retain the use of my own monkey brain producing my own monkey words. Even if it doesn’t produce Shakespeare, I hope it produces something jarringly different at least.
I do, however, use AI as an editor. Two main ways: as a copy editor to help me straighten out grammatical knots, strip out wayward rambles, and critique underdeveloped ideas. I also sometimes use it as an editorial partner where we generate ideas together. Most of my writing does not originate this way, but it does keep me motivated and accountable, especially when it comes to talking about what I’m working on.
Software
These days, almost every line of code in the software that I’m building is written by an AI agent. The level of scrutiny depends on the type of project. For something like Axle, I scrutinize every change, if not at the hunk level, at least at the structural level. For tools like dtg, I review the source only to make sure it’s structurally sound but rely on manually testing and using the software in my day-to-day otherwise.
Regardless, I am deeply involved in every decision that is put into the software that I build. I spend an inordinate amount of time debating approaches and tradeoffs with the AI before a single line of code is laid down. Almost nothing that you can see has not been deeply considered.
Images and videos
I used to create AI-generated images as content but I don’t anymore. The novelty wore off. Even if individual images can be intriguing, they didn’t add much, especially when viewed with the rest of the site as a body of work. That said, this is not a blanket ban. I still use them as texture and I might use them in the future as appropriate.
There is no AI-generated video content on this site. If I record videos, this is how it is done: there isn’t too much planning, I start with a vague outline, press record, and go. Then, I use AI to edit the video and trim out all the unnecessary parts. From that, AI also creates shorter snippets that then get posted on social media.
